this sculpture was born out of the experiments and exercises/projects for the foundation course for first year students where I was drawn to the spatially open structures and ideas as opposed to the very solid approach to threeD. It was build in what is now my lounge which was my studio then...workbench, bandsaw, woodchips and sawdust coating everything and in winter a fire usually ticking away and sometimes a poitjie on the simmer! It has been shown across SA and overseas and then climbed on by some thieves in transit from an exhibition and badly damaged. It landed up on my stoep in storage for many years then I rebuilt it in 2010 and it was later purchased by NMMU.
More on this work: it is about exploring open space and is essentially a story of life....and death...that eternal cycle giving more life. It 'begins' at its centre where a small closed spiral of wood suggests one cycle or one 'life' and wanders on on ever-increasing orbits in the process getting thicker... and thicker, sometimes weaving in and out of itself, yet each 'rotation' generally further from its centre. The form gradually develops into an ovoid shape and with many meters of jointed wood until the outer convolutions are up to 80 mm thick culminating in a 'radical' venturing forth as a growing point on a tangential journey. This outer 'layer' is all burnt and we all know what that alludes to, but death brings forth life.
